MINUBUMWE Says Rwanda’s Unity and Resilience Remain Strong as Citizens Urged to Keep Teaching Children to Live Harmoniously

Rwanda’s Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE) has announced that the level of unity, reconciliation, and resilience among Rwandans continues to rise, reaching an impressive stage in the country’s post-genocide journey. The Ministry indicates that continuous efforts are underway to ensure these gains reach 100%, with all citizens living harmoniously, respecting one another, and embracing a shared national identity.
Several residents expressed that unity in Rwanda has reached a remarkable level; however, they believe more efforts are needed, especially in educating children and young people about peaceful coexistence. They pointed out that some parents do not engage in conversations about Rwanda’s history, unity, and coexistence with their children, despite the essential role this plays in preventing any form of discrimination or divisionism from resurfacing in the future.
Differents people from diffrent places in Rwanda reacted, Alice Mukamugema, the progress is visible but must be protected. She said unity is strong and continues to grow, but parents and communities must consistently teach younger generations to love, respect, and support one another. Another resident, Jean Pierre Niyonzima, highlighted the importance of helping young people understand Rwanda’s history and national values so they can uphold and strengthen unity.
MINUBUMWE’s Minister, Dr. Jean Damascene Bizimana, reaffirmed that the country stands at an encouraging point regarding unity and resilience, though the Ministry aims to push these indicators even higher. He emphasized that while the country has made significant achievements, reaching the 100% target remains a national mission that requires collective action. Dr. Bizimana noted that strengthening unity is a continuous process that depends on cooperation between government institutions, communities, parents, and the youth.
The Ministry has long underscored the importance of addressing the consequences of Rwanda’s painful past, including the long-lasting impact of divisionism and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. To confront these challenges, MINUBUMWE coordinates nationwide activities every year from October 1st to October 31st aimed at deepening unity and resilience. These activities include community dialogues, civic education, youth mentoring programs, visits to genocide memorials, and awareness campaigns designed to rebuild mindsets and reinforce national values.
Residents have called for these initiatives to continue and even be expanded, particularly those that support parents in discussing unity and Rwanda’s historical journey with their children. They believe these household-level conversations are critical in building a future in which every Rwandan is raised with values of peace, compassion, and respect for humanity.
According to both the Ministry and community members, sustaining unity requires intentional efforts within families, schools, communities, and leadership structures. As Rwanda moves forward, citizens are encouraged to remain active participants in reinforcing the unity that underpins the country’s stability and development.
