Gakenke: Newly Inaugurated Nyakaruru Bridge Eases Access to Markets and Schools

In Gakenke District, the newly constructed Nyakaruru Bridge, built using stone and inaugurated in partnership with Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), is set to transform daily life for residents of Gakenke Sector and surrounding areas by improving connectivity and access to essential services.
The bridge, strategically located over the Nyakaruru River, will ease movement for traders, residents, and especially students who often struggled to reach school during the rainy season due to flooding.
Clemence IZERE, a resident of Gahinga Cell, shared her relief: “We used to walk for nearly three hours to get to the market. Now, we can transport our produce more easily and quickly. This bridge brings us closer to development.”
Jean DUKUNDANE, a trader at Gakenke market, added: “We used to lose customers because they couldn’t cross the river. This bridge is like a lifeline for our businesses.”
Solange UWAMWIZA, a high school student, noted: “I used to fear going to school during the rainy season. With this bridge, I feel safe and confident that I’ll get to school on time.”
The Gakenke District administration expressed gratitude to Bridges to Prosperity for their strong partnership in promoting community development through impactful infrastructure like the Nyakaruru Bridge. Authorities encouraged local residents to maintain and protect the bridge for long-term use.
This bridge is part of broader efforts to promote rural-urban integration by improving transport, boosting local trade, expanding access to education and healthcare, and enhancing the overall well-being of the community.
