University of Rwanda Huye Campus Students Appreciate Improved Infrastructure Supporting Learning and Well being

Students at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus, have expressed appreciation for the growing investment in infrastructure that enhances their learning environment and overall well-being. Among the developments they value most is the availability of clean, treated drinking water, which they say has significantly contributed to better health and reduced water-related illnesses.
During evening hours at Huye Campus, students can be seen engaged in various activities some attending classes, others doing sports, while many return to their hostels after lectures. At the same time, a number of students regularly gather at designated water points to fetch safe drinking water provided across the campus.
UWASE Sandrine, a second-year student in the School of Education, said the initiative has brought great benefits. “Previously, we relied mainly on ordinary tap water, which sometimes was not completely safe. Now we have treated drinking water that is clean, fresh, and always available. This helps us maintain good health and avoid diseases caused by poor hygiene,” she said.
MUGISHA Jean Claude, a third-year Medicine student, also emphasized how helpful this initiative has been, especially for students with demanding academic schedules. “As students, we spend a lot of energy in lectures and laboratory sessions, so clean water is extremely important. Having it close to our study areas saves time and keeps us active and healthy,” he noted.
Despite their gratitude, some students believe the supply should be expanded due to the large student population. UWITONZE Alice, a first-year Law student, explained: “The water is very useful and essential. We only request that more water points be added, especially near hostels and crowded areas, so that all students can easily access it whenever they need it.”
University management promises further improvements
The Head of Health and Infrastructure Safety at the University of Rwanda Huye Campus, NDAYISHIMIYE Martin, acknowledged that there are still some challenges in ensuring equal water access everywhere, but assured students that the situation is being addressed. “We are aware that the number of students continues to increase, and so does the demand for drinking water. There is an ongoing plan to install more water machines and larger storage facilities. By next year, the service will be much better than it is now,” he said.
More than water other infrastructure also appreciated
Beyond clean drinking water, students also appreciate other infrastructure improvements at Huye Campus. These include well-constructed outdoor benches that provide safe and comfortable study and relaxation spaces, improved internal roads, and well-equipped academic facilities.
HABIMANA Emmanuel, a fourth-year Information Technology student, shared his experience: “Studying is now far easier than before. Classrooms are well equipped, internet access is available, and the campus environment supports our health and comfort. All these developments motivate us to work harder in our studies.”
The University of Rwanda Huye Campus continues to prioritize student welfare through ongoing infrastructure development aimed at improving both learning conditions and daily life on campus. Students say they remain hopeful that the ongoing improvements will further strengthen academic performance and enhance their overall campus experience in the near future.
