Musanze: District Authorities Pledge Solution to Persistent Foul Odor from Mushroom Factory

Authorities in Musanze District have promised to work closely with Kigali Farms Ltd, a mushroom-producing factory, to address the persistent issue of a strong odor emitted from the factory’s waste, which has been disturbing residents of Kabirizi Cell in Gacaca Sector.

Residents have repeatedly raised complaints over the years, particularly during community meetings, citing the unbearable smell that worsens at night and affects their well-being. The odor is reportedly caused by heaps of mushroom waste left to decompose near the factory while waiting to be processed into compost.

Florida Nyakwezi, one of the residents living close to the factory, said: “This smell has become a serious issue. At night, it gets worse. We go to bed but can’t sleep because of the polluted air from that waste.”

Another resident, Jean Bosco Nkundimfura, added: “We’ve spoken about these many times. Our health is at stake because of the factory. Children are falling sick, and elderly people are struggling to breathe. We ask that this problem be addressed urgently.”

Ella Liliane Mutuyimana, the Human Resource Officer at Kigali Farms Ltd, confirmed that they have held discussions with district officials and local residents, and measures are underway. “We have already started preparing to build a high perimeter fence that will help reduce the odor. We’re committed to working with the community to resolve this issue,” she said.

Théobard Kayiranga, the Musanze District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, reassured residents that a permanent solution is on the way. “We’ve had discussions with the factory management and agreed on the need for a lasting solution. Citizens must be able to live in a safe and healthy environment,” he stated.

This is not the first time the community has raised concerns about this factory. During various meetings, residents have consistently pointed out the foul smell as a major disturbance to their health and quality of life. They are now calling for swift implementation of the promised measures to prevent long-term health risks linked to the polluted air.
