Huye Complex Car Park: A Decade of Transforming Urban Mobility and Local Livelihoods

Huye More than ten years after it officially began operations, Huye Complex Car Park continues to stand out as a key driver of urban development, improved transport services, and economic growth in Huye District, according to residents, transport operators, and local leaders.
Throughout the day, the terminal is characterized by a steady flow of buses and minibuses arriving and departing, transporting passengers and goods to various parts of the country. Vehicles are neatly parked in designated areas, while passengers board or disembark in an organized, safe, and clean environment.
The terminal was officially opened in 2015 and serves as a major transport hub linking the Southern Province with the Western Province and the City of Kigali. Many users say this connectivity has significantly eased travel and improved efficiency in public transportation.
Jean Claude Ndayishimiye, a public transport driver operating from Huye Complex Car Park, says the facility has brought a major shift in how transport services are delivered. “Before this terminal was built, our work was disorganized. There was no proper parking or order. Today, everything is well structured, security is guaranteed, and passengers trust us more, which has improved both our work and income,” he said.
Passengers also commend the terminal for improving service delivery. Chantal Mukamana, a frequent traveler between Huye and Kigali, says the terminal has made her journeys more reliable and comfortable. “When you arrive at Huye Complex Car Park, you know exactly where to go and when your bus will depart. The services are better, and we wait in a safe and clean environment,” she explained.
Eric Habimana, a student at the University of Rwanda Huye Campus, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the terminal has helped students manage their travel schedules more effectively. “For students like us, an organized bus terminal is very important. Buses depart on time, and the information provided helps us avoid delays, especially during the academic term,” he said.
Beyond transportation, Huye Complex Car Park has stimulated business growth in the surrounding area. The terminal is surrounded by commercial buildings hosting shops, restaurants, and various service providers that cater to travelers and local residents alike.
Beatha Uwimana, a food vendor operating near the terminal, says the constant flow of passengers has positively impacted her business. “Many travelers pass through this terminal every day, which means more customers for us. This terminal has truly changed our lives and improved our livelihoods,” she noted.
The Mayor of Huye District, Ange Sebutege, describes the terminal as a vital public infrastructure project that has significantly contributed to the district’s socio-economic development. “Huye Complex Car Park has played a major role in job creation, business growth, and improving the overall image of Huye as a modern city,” he said.
Currently, the terminal hosts at least five public transport companies operating routes to Kigali, the Western Province, and other regions of the country. Motorcycle taxis also operate within and around the terminal, providing essential last-mile transport services for many passengers.
Statistics indicate that between 30,000 and 40,000 people pass through Huye Complex Car Park every day, underscoring its importance as a backbone of mobility, commerce, and urban life in the Southern Province.
