Mozambique Resumes LNG Production in Cabo Delgado

TopAfricanews has reliably learned that production of Liquified Natural Gas has been resumed in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.

The U$20 billion LNG facility has roared back to life after five years of lull following a military campaign that sought to dislodge islamists rebels in the region.

TotalEnergies which operates the facility said that work will continue in a “containment mode”, with some workers being moved in and out by air and sea to maintain the security gains achieved by the intervention.

The “containment” and security zone created by the Rwandan intervention has provided the safety for 4,000 workers to return to the site.

The TotalEnergies Mozambique LNG project is widely considered the largest single private-sector investment in Africa.

Presidents of Mozambique Daniel Chapo and President of Rwanda Paul Kagame in August 2025 signed a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) in Kigali.

The agreement is a standard legal framework for long-term foreign military presence, outlining the legal rights, jurisdiction, and administrative arrangements for Rwandan troops.

At the request of Mozambique, Rwanda deployed troops in Cabo Delgado with an estimated presence of upto 5000 boots on ground.
