Amplifying Development Impact

Gisagara to Gain Paved Road Linking Rwabusoro to Nyanza, Boosting Hopes for Development

After many years of concern from residents about the challenges caused by poor road infrastructure, Gisagara District is set to benefit from the construction of a new paved road connecting Rwabusoro to Nyanza, with further access to Bugesera and the City of Kigali. The Government of Rwanda has approved the project, which is expected to significantly boost the local economy and improve transportation for residents.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Infrastructure, Dr. Jimmy Gasore, who explained that the road is among the priority projects the government has committed to implementing in order to strengthen the national infrastructure network and better integrate rural districts into the country’s economy.

Located in Rwanda’s Southern Province, Gisagara District is widely known for its agricultural productivity. The area produces rice, maize, beans, vegetables, and various fruits. Its fertile wetlands, particularly in Rwabusoro, generate high yields that supply markets across the country.

Despite this strong agricultural output, poor road conditions have long posed a serious challenge. The Gisagara Rwabusoro Nyanza road has been a dirt road that becomes nearly impassable during the rainy season. Vehicles often struggle to pass, and in some cases, transportation comes to a complete halt. As a result, farmers have suffered losses due to spoiled produce and rising transportation costs.

For years, residents have petitioned authorities to upgrade the road to asphalt, emphasizing its importance as a key link to major markets such as Nyanza, Bugesera, and Kigali. The road also plays a strategic role in connecting the Southern and Eastern Provinces, supporting broader efforts to enhance inter-district trade and facilitate the movement of people and goods.

Speaking to local media, several residents expressed excitement about the government’s decision. Uwimana Cecile, a resident of Kansi Sector, described how poor road conditions affected her farming activities. “For a long time, we appealed to the authorities to construct a paved road. During the rainy season, vehicles refused to come and collect our produce, or they charged very high fees because of the bad roads. This project is a great opportunity for us,” she said.

Habimana Jean Baptiste, a maize trader from Gikonko Sector, noted that the new road will expand business opportunities and reduce transportation costs. “We will now be able to deliver our produce to Kigali and Bugesera markets on time. The time we used to lose on the road will decrease, and transport expenses will be lower. This will increase our profits,” he explained.

Mukandayisenga Beatha, a rice farmer in the Rwabusoro marshland, emphasized the safety benefits of a paved road. “The dirt roads caused accidents and vehicle breakdowns, resulting in losses. A paved road will improve safety, and we will travel with greater confidence,” she said.

Minister Gasore reiterated that the government is prioritizing roads that enhance trade and facilitate the movement of people and goods. “The road connecting Rwabusoro to Gisagara will be constructed alongside other roads in the area, as it is among the priority routes identified by the government. Our goal is to ease trade, reduce transportation costs, and promote regional economic development,” he stated.

He added that expanding paved road networks in rural areas aligns with the government’s broader strategy to ensure inclusive and sustainable development by extending infrastructure services to all citizens.

Once completed, the new road will complement the existing paved road from Huye to Gisagara District headquarters. This improved connectivity is expected to accelerate trade, attract investment, and create employment opportunities for young people.

The project is also anticipated to increase the value of agricultural produce, reduce post-harvest losses, and open new opportunities in transportation, storage, and commerce.

For the people of Gisagara, this road is more than just infrastructure it represents renewed hope for economic growth and improved living standards.
