Strong Alcoholic Drinks Known as “Ibyuma” Raise New Concerns as Citizens Call for Stricter Quality Control

As excessive alcohol consumption continues to be reported in various parts of the country, high-alcohol drinks popularly known as “Ibyuma” have once again sparked public debate. Many citizens accuse these beverages of contributing to serious health and social problems, prompting calls for authorities to strengthen oversight of their production and distribution.

In Kigali and several other regions across the country, these drinks known for their high alcohol content have gained significant popularity, particularly among young people. They are often purchased because they are relatively cheaper than many other alcoholic beverages and have a rapid intoxicating effect. However, their growing popularity has been accompanied by increasing public concern about their potential consequences.

Some residents report that wherever these drinks become widespread, cases of extreme drunkenness, family conflicts, and irresponsible behavior among young people tend to rise. According to community members, individuals who consume “Ibyuma” often struggle to regain sobriety quickly due to the drinks’ potency, sometimes affecting their ability to perform daily tasks and maintain employment.

In interviews with Top Africa News, citizens emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of the quality and safety standards of these beverages to ensure they comply with national regulations before reaching the market. Other residents also shared incidents in which individuals under the influence of these beverages engaged in actions that could lead to road accidents or violent disputes, intensifying concerns about whether the alcohol content in some of these products is being adequately regulated.

Niyonzima Patrick, a resident of Huye District, expressed concern about the strength of the drinks and their impact on public health. He noted that even small quantities can lead to severe intoxication, raising questions about whether they meet the required safety standards. “Human life must come first,” he stressed.

Similarly, UWIRINGIYIMANA Beatha from Muhanga District voiced concern over the growing number of young consumers. She explained that their affordability makes them especially attractive to youth, who may overlook the long-term consequences. She called for both stricter regulatory control and increased public awareness campaigns on responsible drinking.

On the regulatory side, the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) confirmed that the issue is under review. The agency’s Head of Communications, Isingizwe Marie Claire, stated that authorities will strengthen inspections to determine whether any of the beverages fail to meet established safety standards. She also reminded the public that excessive alcohol consumption itself poses serious health risks.

Rwanda FDA reiterated that it is responsible for monitoring all food and beverage products placed on the market. In cases where non-compliance is identified, the agency may take measures, including suspending products and holding responsible parties accountable.

Medical experts warn that beverages with high alcohol content can increase the risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, mental health disorders, and cognitive impairment. There are also broader societal concerns that excessive drinking may contribute to traffic accidents, domestic violence, community disputes, and reduced workplace productivity.

Although many alcohol manufacturers operate legally and are subject to routine inspection, citizens are urging authorities to conduct a deeper review of whether the alcohol percentage in certain products should be reduced or whether stronger public education campaigns on moderate drinking are needed.

As investigations continue, public voices remain firm in calling for health and safety to take precedence over commercial interests, with the ultimate goal of protecting Rwandans’ well-being and promoting a safer society.
