Amplifying Development Impact

Progressive Terracing Transforms the Livelihoods of Farmers in Nyabihu

Radical Terraces Boost Agricultural Yields and Curb Devastating Soil Erosion Farmers in Arusha Cell, Bigogwe Sector of Nyabihu District are celebrating remarkable progress in agriculture following the construction of radical terraces, which they say have provided a lasting solution to soil erosion that once destroyed their crops and limited their harvests.

For years, farmers in this hilly region faced serious challenges caused by severe soil erosion. Heavy rains would wash away fertile soil and damage crops, leaving farmers with minimal yields despite significant effort and investment. Agriculture became a risky venture, heavily dependent on unpredictable weather conditions.

UWIHANGANYE Domiane, a farmer from Arusha Cell, recalls how difficult farming used to be before the terraces were introduced. “We used to farm in fear of the rain. Whenever it rained heavily, it would wash away our crops. Soil erosion destroyed everything, and all our hard work would go to waste. Today, radical terraces have helped us greatly; our crops grow well, and we no longer suffer the losses we used to experience.”

HANYURWIMFURA Peraji also emphasizes the visible transformation the terraces have brought to their lives and productivity. “Now we farm with confidence and hope for a good harvest. The terraces slow down water runoff, prevent soil erosion, and significantly increase production. We have moved from subsistence farming to agriculture that generates income.”

Farmers report that since the establishment of radical terraces, both the quantity and quality of their harvests have improved considerably. Irish potatoes, maize, and wheat are now produced in greater volumes, marking a significant shift in agricultural performance within the area.

The Mayor of Nyabihu District, Mukandayisenga Antoinette, affirms that radical terraces are among the sustainable solutions the district has prioritized to combat soil erosion and promote agricultural development. “Radical terraces have been a lasting solution for our residents and the district at large. Beyond controlling soil erosion, they have tangibly increased agricultural productivity, thereby improving the livelihoods of our people.”

According to Nyabihu District authorities, the impact of radical terracing is clearly reflected in productivity figures. On average, farmers harvest at least 20 tons of Irish potatoes per hectare annually, 4.7 tons of maize, and 3 tons of wheat per hectare.

These achievements strengthen hopes that Nyabihu will continue to rank among Rwanda’s leading food-producing districts through sustainable land management and environmental conservation practices.

Residents say they have been encouraged to maintain and properly manage the terraces to ensure long-term benefits and sustained agricultural growth.

As Rwanda continues to prioritize agriculture as a pillar of national development, Nyabihu stands as a powerful example of how investment in soil conservation and improved land management can significantly uplift rural economies and enhance farmers’ resilience.
