New Generation Academy launches Rwanda’s first Private Coding Program

New Generation Academy (NGA) has officially launched a specialized program in software programming and embedded systems, becoming the first private school in Rwanda to offer this advanced technical curriculum to young learners.

Located in Kimihurura, Kigali, the New Generation Coding Academy opened its doors last October. The program is specifically tailored for high-achieving students who have completed Lower Secondary with top marks in Mathematics, Physics, and English—subjects deemed critical for success in the global tech landscape.

Previously, this specialized level of training was primarily available through the state-run Rwanda Coding Academy (RCA). However, due to high demand and limited placement, many talented students were unable to enroll.

Jean-Claude Tuyisenge, Founder and Managing Director of New Generation Academy, noted that the initiative provides a much-needed alternative for students, including those from international backgrounds.

“This program was previously only available at RCA. Due to limited slots and high demand, many gifted students missed out. Additionally, those following international curricula often found it nearly impossible to access such a program,” Tuyisenge explained.

The curriculum is designed to be practical and industry-aligned, ensuring students graduate with market-ready skills by focusing on embedded systems and software development.

Instruction is delivered by professionals with real-world industry experience through hands-on, project-based learning. The availability of essential equipment, such as 3D printers, a Pick and Place (P&P) machine, engraving and laser cutting machines, as well as drone simulation and flight tools, makes this possible.
The academy welcomes both students from the national curriculum and those from international programs (such as Cambridge).

New Generation Academy is no stranger to innovation. The school has long been a pioneer in Rwanda, introducing Coding, Robotics, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to children at the nursery and primary levels.

This prompted the Rwanda Education Board to roll out the program to other schools as well.

By integrating this advanced secondary-level “trade” into its existing Christian-based educational framework, NGA is solidifying its position as a leader in Rwanda’s mission to cultivate a tech-savvy generation.

Since 2024, significant changes have taken place. To date, this is the only school that both teaches and conducts drone operations. Last year, it trained students and lecturers from the University of Rwanda in drone operations.

In addition, the school is supporting the Ministry of Sports in mapping all sports infrastructure across the country using drones, a project that covers nearly 4,000 facilities.
