Rwanda’s Agriculture Board Urges Farmers to Adopt Timely Planting and Smart Practices for Food Security in Season B 2026

The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) is spearheading a drive to encourage farmers to adopt timely planting, diligence, and smart agricultural practices as foundational elements for boosting productivity and enhancing household nutrition.

This critical message was delivered at the official launch of the 2026 Season B planting activities in Musanze district, Gataraga Sector, at the Manjari site. The area is slated for potato cultivation across more than 61.9 hectares, underscoring the crop’s regional importance, especially in Northern Rwanda’s favorable climate.

The event saw the attendance of key leaders and stakeholders, including Dr. UWAMAHORO Florence, the Acting Director General of RAB, as well as the Chairperson of the District Council, Michel Ndayambaje, and the Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, UWANYIRIGIRA Clarisse. Their collective presence highlighted the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen Rwanda’s agricultural sector.

In her address, Dr. UWAMAHORO Florence stressed that discipline and punctuality are paramount in farming. She strongly advised farmers to complete land preparation and planting within the designated timeframe to ensure maximum yields, noting that planting delays often lead to reduced production and increased vulnerability to unpredictable weather.

“Farmers must understand that agriculture today requires commitment, planning, and working according to the agricultural calendar. Timely planting is not an option—it is a necessity if we are to increase production and ensure food security,” she stated.

Furthermore, Dr. UWAMAHORO called on farmers to cultivate a savings culture post-harvest to build long-term resilience. By setting aside a portion of their produce or income, families can better weather future uncertainties and secure their livelihoods.

“We encourage every farmer to not only focus on production but also on saving for the future. What you harvest should not only feed your families today but also secure your tomorrow. This is how we can effectively fight malnutrition and stunting in our communities,” she added.

Farmers in Gataraga Sector welcomed the guidance from experts and leaders, expressing their commitment to implementing the new advice. Many noted that such initiatives provide them with essential knowledge and motivation to improve their practices. They acknowledged that partnering with government institutions like RAB grants them access to improved seeds, technical guidance, and modern farming techniques crucial for higher productivity.

The launch of the 2026 Season B planting activities is a significant step in Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to transforming its agricultural sector into a modern, productive, and sustainable industry. With continued institutional support from RAB and active farmer participation, there is strong optimism that increased yields will substantially contribute to food security, improved nutrition, and overall economic growth.
