EAC Calls For Immediate Ceasefire, Peaceful Resolution Of DRC Conflict

The East African Community (EAC) has, called upon the various parties involved in the ongoing conflict in Eastern DRC to immediately cease hostilities and observe a ceasefire.
The call was made during the 25th Summit of Heads of State, held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in Arusha, Tanzania.
Despite the commitments enshrined in the Washington Agreements of December 4, 2025, and the commitment made in Doha on July 19, 2025, in favor of a permanent ceasefire and a definitive cessation of hostilities, both sides have failed to honour agreements.
“The Summit commended His Excellency Dr. William Samoei Ruto, CGH, President of the Republic of Kenya and Chair of the East African Community, for his decisive role in implementing the Summit’s decisions relating to the peace and security situation in eastern DRC and for coordinating the process; called on all parties to the conflict to cease hostilities and observe an immediate ceasefire, while reaffirming its commitment to a peaceful settlement of their differences,” reads in part the EAC’s final communiqué.
However, the security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo remains worrying.
Intense clashes continue on different frontlines between the AFC/M23 and government troops within both South and North Kivu provinces.
The AFC/M23 rebels accuse the regime of President Félix Tshisekedi of having deliberately decided to violate the ceasefire and impose all-out war on it in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
