Musanze Families Embrace Nutrition Education in Child Malnutrition Fight

Kiningi Sector in Musanze District recently hosted a three-day community campaign to bolster child nutrition and protection efforts. Under the banner of “Let’s meet in the family and move forward together,” the initiative convened local officials, development partners, and residents to address the critical issue of child malnutrition.

Led by Musanze District Vice Mayor for Social Affairs, Kayiranga Theobald, the campaign’s core message centered on equipping families with knowledge about proper child feeding, balanced diets, and the essential role of parental responsibility in ensuring young children thrive.

Vice Mayor Kayiranga stressed that a child’s well-being begins at home, urging parents to make proper nutrition a priority. While acknowledging Rwanda’s overall progress in child health, he pointed out that malnutrition remains a persistent challenge requiring continuous, collective action from both government and families.

“Children are the foundation of our future. Preventing malnutrition starts with families understanding the importance of preparing balanced meals for their children,” he stated. He encouraged parents to utilize accessible, locally-sourced foods to create nutritious diets, ensuring every child grows up healthy and strong.

The awareness drive featured educational sessions, live demonstrations on preparing balanced meals, and discussions on child protection and family welfare. These community-based events, Vice Mayor Kayiranga noted, are vital for providing parents with practical knowledge on feeding, hygiene, and early childhood care to shield children from health risks.

Parents attending the campaign expressed sincere gratitude, highlighting how the program transformed their understanding of child care. Claudine MUKARUKUNDO shared, “Before attending this session, I did not fully understand how important it is to mix foods like vegetables, beans, and fruits when feeding children. Now I have learned that good nutrition is not always about expensive food but about preparing balanced meals using what we already have.”

Similarly, parent Jean Baptiste HABIMANA welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its role in shifting mindsets about feeding practices. “This campaign is very helpful for us as parents,” he commented. “Sometimes we underestimate the impact of poor nutrition on our children, but through these teachings we understand how proper feeding protects their health and future.”

Local leaders underscored that community involvement is key to fostering a generation of healthy, malnutrition-free children. They encouraged all families in Kiningi Sector to actively implement the knowledge gained and share these vital lessons throughout their neighborhoods. The three-day effort is expected to make a significant impact by empowering numerous families with practical knowledge for nutrition and responsible parenting.
