Kigali Modern Tree Nursery: A Strategic Partnership to Boost Urban Greening

KIGALI – A major step forward in Rwanda’s environmental landscape was marked today with the formalization of a strategic partnership to power the newly launched Kigali Modern Tree Nursery.

Located in Busanza, Kicukiro District, this state-of-the-art facility occupies 1.4 hectares and is poised to become a vital engine for the city’s greening efforts.

The initiative, a collaborative project between the City of Kigali, the Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA), and One Acre Fund Rwanda, aims to address the growing need for high-quality seedlings for agroforestry, landscape restoration, and urban greening.

Ahead of the official launch, key partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a joint framework for the nursery’s operations. The signing ceremony featured high-level leadership, including:

• Belinda Bwiza, CEO of One Acre Fund Rwanda
• Dr. Concorde Nsengumuremyi, Director General of the Rwanda Forestry Authority
• Mr. Dusabimana Fulgence, Vice Mayor of the City of Kigali

The agreement, which was endorsed by the Minister of Environment, Hon. Dr. Arakwiye Bernadette, ensures a coordinated approach to maximizing the distribution of high-quality tree seedlings across Kigali and its surrounding areas.

The nursery is designed to be highly productive, with the capacity to produce over one million seedlings annually. This massive output is set to provide numerous benefits to the capital and the wider region:

• Environmental Resilience: By significantly increasing the availability of fruit and forest tree seedlings, the nursery will directly bolster efforts to combat climate change, reduce soil erosion, and mitigate the urban heat island effect.
• Support for Farmers: Beyond urban beautification, the facility provides local farmers with easier access to certified seedlings, which is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and household nutrition.
• Sustainable Growth: This partnership represents a unified commitment to “Nurturing Rwanda’s Green Heritage,” ensuring that the country’s ambitious reforestation goals are met through collaboration, shared knowledge, and community-driven action.
