Rwanda Set to Host Global Montreal Protocol Summit on Ozone Protection

Rwanda is set to host the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP38) from November 2 to 6, 2026, bringing together governments, international organizations, industry representatives and environmental partners for a major global discussion on protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change.

The international meeting will place Rwanda at the centre of global efforts to strengthen implementation of the Montreal Protocol, a landmark international agreement aimed at protecting the Earth’s ozone layer by controlling and phasing out substances that contribute to its depletion.

MOP38 is expected to provide a platform for representatives of governments and other key stakeholders to assess progress in implementing the Protocol, discuss emerging environmental challenges and consider measures to further strengthen international cooperation in protecting the atmosphere.

The ozone layer plays a critical role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Its protection is closely linked to climate action because many substances historically used in refrigeration, air conditioning, industrial processes and other applications can also have significant effects on the climate.

The meeting will therefore bring together a broad range of actors, including government officials, international institutions, industries and organizations working in environmental protection. Their participation is expected to support discussions on practical measures, technological solutions and cooperation needed to advance the objectives of the Montreal Protocol.

Rwanda’s hosting of MOP38 comes as countries continue working to implement international environmental commitments and strengthen responses to climate-related challenges. The gathering is also expected to provide opportunities for countries and partners to exchange experiences and identify areas where cooperation can accelerate progress.

For Rwanda, the conference will provide an opportunity to showcase its engagement in environmental protection and international climate action while contributing to global discussions on safeguarding the ozone layer.

The five-day meeting, scheduled for November 2 – 6, 2026, is expected to attract high-level participation from across the world, making Kigali a key venue for discussions on the future of ozone-layer protection and efforts to address the wider environmental and climate challenges facing the planet.
