The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to deliver its decision by the end of November on Senegal’s appeal against the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco.
Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time in the final played in Rabat in January 2025. The match was marked by controversy when Senegal’s players walked off the pitch for roughly 15 minutes in protest at a late penalty awarded to Morocco. The spot-kick was missed, play eventually resumed, and Senegal scored the winner in extra time.
In March 2026, CAF’s Appeal Board ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match by leaving the field without the referee’s permission, in breach of AFCON regulations. The result was overturned to a 3-0 victory for Morocco, transferring the title to the Atlas Lions. Senegal lodged an appeal with CAS in March, with the hearing taking place in Lausanne on 8 October 2026.
CAS confirmed this week that a full reasoned award, including legal grounds, will require several more weeks and is expected by the end of November. The ruling will finally determine the official champions of the 2025 tournament. The next AFCON is scheduled for 2027 in co-host nations Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
