Harry Kane Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or as England Ends 25-Year Wait

Harry Kane has been named the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or winner, becoming the first English player to claim the award since Michael Owen in 2001. The Bayern Munich striker was honoured at a London ceremony on Monday night after a prolific season that brought 73 goals for club and country and a domestic double with Bayern. He finished ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in a very close vote.

An emotional Kane described the win as beyond his wildest dreams, thanking his family (especially his wife), Bayern and England teammates and staff, and former club Tottenham. He stressed hard work and resilience and said he is already thinking about defending the award.

Congratulations poured in from England figures including manager Thomas Tuchel and Prince William, who praised Kane’s leadership and performances. Bayern and many fans highlighted his journey from a long trophy drought to individual recognition. Barcelona president Joan Laporta accepted the result but insisted Yamal had the merits to win and will claim the Ballon d’Or in the future; the teenager also collected the Kopa Trophy again.

Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or for a third time. While Kane’s humility and scoring numbers have drawn widespread praise, the tight race and strong cases for Mbappé and Yamal continue to fuel debate.
