KIGALI, Rwanda – The Rwanda Bankers Association (RBA), in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has launched a new digital learning platform aimed at strengthening Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) knowledge and accelerating the adoption of sustainable finance practices across Rwanda’s banking sector.

The RBA ESG e-Learning Platform, unveiled on June 19, 2026, marks a significant step in Rwanda’s efforts to build a resilient, inclusive and sustainable financial system. The platform will provide banking professionals with continuous, accessible and locally relevant training on ESG principles and their practical application within the financial industry.

The online platform features structured learning modules covering key areas including ESG fundamentals, climate risk management, sustainable finance, governance, ESG disclosure, financial inclusion, nature finance, and environmental and social risk management. It is designed to equip financial institutions with the skills needed to meet evolving regulatory requirements, respond to market expectations and integrate sustainability into their core business strategies.

Speaking at the launch, Rwanda Bankers Association Chief Executive Officer Tony Francis Ntore said sustainability has become an essential pillar of modern banking and risk management.

“Around the world, climate change, social inequality and governance challenges are reshaping financial risk,” he said. “Rwanda has led this shift through its Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy, its Nationally Determined Contributions and the Green Taxonomy. As a sector, we knew we also had to evolve.”

Ntore noted that the banking sector has already taken important steps through the introduction of ESG Awareness Guidelines for Banks and the establishment of an ESG Community of Practice that brings together banks, regulators and development partners to share experiences and best practices.

He added that the platform’s impact extends far beyond training.

“It strengthens risk management, supports stronger environmental and social management systems, improves readiness for new regulations, and helps finance Rwanda’s sustainable development goals more effectively,” he said.

The launch was officiated by Minister of Environment Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye, who highlighted the critical role financial institutions play in mobilising private capital for Rwanda’s transition towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy.

“Every day, banks make decisions that shape the future of our economy,” she said. “The projects you finance, the risks you assess and the clients you support can accelerate our transition to a greener and more competitive economy or expose businesses and financial institutions to growing environmental and climate-related risks.”

She stressed that economic prosperity and environmental sustainability are mutually reinforcing objectives.

“Countries and businesses that manage natural resources responsibly, invest in resilience and embrace sustainability are increasingly proving to be more competitive, more attractive to investors and better prepared for future shocks,” she added.

For the private sector, the initiative represents an important opportunity to strengthen capacity in identifying and financing green and sustainable investments.

IFC Resident Representative Jiyeon Janice Ryu said Rwanda’s financial institutions will play an increasingly vital role in directing capital towards projects that generate both economic returns and positive environmental and social outcomes.

She emphasized that achieving Rwanda’s climate and development ambitions will require continued collaboration among financial institutions, regulators, policymakers, development partners and businesses to build a more resilient and sustainable economy.

The launch of the RBA ESG e-Learning Platform comes at a time when sustainable finance is rapidly becoming a competitive advantage for African financial institutions. As global investors increasingly seek markets with strong sustainability frameworks, Rwanda’s banking sector is positioning itself to better manage emerging risks, unlock green investment opportunities and support the country’s long-term economic transformation.

With the new platform, Rwanda is taking another significant step toward embedding sustainability into the heart of its financial system, ensuring that banks are better prepared to finance the transition to a greener, more inclusive and resilient economy.
