Kagame and Erdoğan Discuss Trade Gains, Defence Cooperation and Regional De-escalation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan

KIGALI — Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation on Thursday in which they reviewed growing economic ties between their countries and discussed efforts to ease tensions in the Great Lakes region.

The two leaders noted positive progress in trade and investment. They agreed to continue working together in several sectors, with particular attention to defence industry cooperation.

On regional issues, they addressed the situation between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Erdoğan welcomed ongoing efforts to reduce tensions and expressed support for the continuation of a constructive approach by both sides.

The conversation took place as part of broader diplomatic contacts Erdoğan held with African leaders on the same day. Rwanda and Türkiye have steadily expanded their partnership in recent years, with Turkish firms increasing their presence in Rwanda and both countries deepening security and economic links.

The call comes amid continued attempts to implement earlier peace commitments aimed at resolving the long-running conflict in eastern Congo.
