Rwanda and Mali Move to Deepen Security Cooperation and Regional Peace Efforts

Rwanda and Mali are seeking to strengthen bilateral relations, expand security cooperation and intensify joint efforts to address regional and continental peace and security challenges, as the two countries step up diplomatic engagement to tackle shared concerns.

The commitment emerged during talks between Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Malian counterpart, Abdoulaye Diop, in Bamako, Mali’s capital, where the Rwandan minister is on an official working visit.

In a message posted on X on the morning of October 13, 2026, Nduhungirehe said the discussions focused on strengthening relations between the two countries, with particular emphasis on cooperation in international forums and addressing peace and security challenges affecting their respective regions and Africa as a whole.

He noted that both sides explored ways to reinforce their diplomatic ties and broaden cooperation in addressing common challenges, particularly those related to promoting peace, stability and security.

The discussions reflect the two countries’ shared interest in deepening collaboration on issues of mutual concern while enhancing their engagement on the regional and international stage.

During his visit, Nduhungirehe also met Mali’s Minister of National Reconciliation, Lt. Gen. Ismaël Wagué, with whom he discussed approaches to promoting national unity and reconciliation among Malians.

Rwanda brings considerable experience in reconciliation and national cohesion, having pursued extensive efforts to rebuild trust and restore social unity following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Over the years, the country has established various programmes and institutions aimed at fostering reconciliation, strengthening social relationships and promoting unity among Rwandans, contributing to national recovery and development.

Mali, meanwhile, continues to face security challenges and conflicts that have made peacebuilding, social cohesion and national reconciliation critical priorities in its pursuit of lasting stability.

Rwanda’s experience in rebuilding trust and promoting unity could therefore provide opportunities for knowledge-sharing and dialogue as Mali continues its efforts to address internal divisions and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

Relations between Rwanda and Mali have steadily developed since Mali opened its embassy in Rwanda in February 2017, creating a foundation for expanded diplomatic engagement and cooperation across various sectors.

The partnership gained further momentum in 2023, when the two countries signed agreements covering different areas of cooperation, reinforcing their commitment to pursuing shared development objectives.

In 2024, Rwanda and Mali signed 19 agreements aimed at promoting inclusive development and strengthening bilateral cooperation, marking another significant step in the expansion of their relationship.
