Egypt is accelerating the integration of renewable energy into its industrial sector, with plans to deploy 1,000MW of solar power capacity to serve approximately 7,000 factories under its Shams El-Senaa (Industry Sun) initiative.

The programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce industrial energy costs, diversify electricity sources and strengthen the competitiveness of domestic manufacturing.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently reviewed the initiative’s implementation framework with Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat. Discussions also highlighted plans to extend solar deployment beyond industrial facilities to government buildings and other public infrastructure.

Beyond reducing electricity bills, the initiative is expected to lower factories’ dependence on natural gas, improve production efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint of Egyptian manufactured products.

Building a Domestic Solar Industry

An important dimension of the programme is its potential to stimulate Egypt’s domestic renewable energy supply chain.

The government intends to use the initiative to encourage local manufacturing of solar energy components, increase domestic content and attract investment into renewable energy industries.

The programme will also require a coordinated framework for project implementation, equipment maintenance, technical inspections and workforce training to ensure the long-term performance of installed systems.

Separately, the government is coordinating a nationwide programme to install solar power systems on the rooftops of public buildings.

What This Means for Egypt’s Solar Market

The proposed 1GW deployment represents more than an industrial energy efficiency programme. It could create a substantial domestic market for solar developers, equipment manufacturers, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies, and financing institutions.

With approximately 7,000 factories targeted, the initiative could generate opportunities across distributed solar development, rooftop installations, energy management, equipment supply and long-term maintenance services.

It also reinforces Egypt’s ambition to position renewable energy as an instrument of industrial competitiveness, particularly as international markets increasingly place emphasis on the carbon intensity of manufactured products.

However, the programme’s success will depend on financing structures, project execution, factory participation and the development of a reliable local installation and maintenance ecosystem.

For solar developers and investors, Egypt’s industrial sector could become an increasingly important market for distributed renewable energy solutions.

LumAfrik editorial angle: The most interesting part of this announcement is not just the 1GW target, but the potential creation of a large-scale distributed solar market driven by industrial demand.
