Kinigi Potato Prices Soar in Musanze to 1,000–1,200 RWF per Kilogram

Sebeya Catchment Protection and Landscape Restoration activities have resulted into increased production of Irish potatoes

Kinigi Potato Prices have risen sharply in Musanze District.

Moreover, Musanze is the country’s main production hub for the variety.

A kilogram now sells for between 1,000 and 1,200 RWF in local markets.

Traders and consumers report that current levels are significantly higher than earlier in the year. Farm-gate and local market prices for Kinigi Potato Prices often ranged between 400 and 600 RWF per kilogram. Premium graded lots are now at the upper end of the new range. Even ordinary quality has climbed above 1,000 RWF in several Musanze markets.

Households that rely on this variety for daily meals and chips report higher costs. As a result, they buy smaller quantities or switch to other foods. Farmers in Kinigi also see price pressures affecting planting decisions and crop rotations. This trend also influences local vendors who adjust stock levels and promotions.

Additionally, farmers in Kinigi Sector and nearby areas attribute the surge to tight supply. Stocks from the previous harvest have largely been exhausted.

Earlier weather setbacks affected some fields and led to limited production. High costs for seed and fertilizers also constrain farming.

Moreover, strong demand from both local buyers and traders supplying Kigali and other towns has further pushed prices upward.

Musanze remains the heartland of Kinigi cultivation. The variety is prized for its firm texture and high dry-matter content. It has a longer shelf life and is suitable for processing. Farmers report strong demand from processors. This supports local livelihoods.

Collection centers in the district help cooperatives negotiate sales. Additionally, many smallholder farmers note elevated input costs. These costs leave limited gains even at higher market rates. They seek better margins through collective buying and improved bargaining. Cooperatives explore subsidies and price supports. Still, the overall profitability remains modest.
