Tragic death of former Rwandan soldier, musician in Mpigi
MPIGI, Uganda — Authorities found the body of Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan soldier and musician widely known as Sergeant Robert, without its head in Luwala village, Kamengo sub-county, Mpigi District, on October 17, 2026.
The discovery in Mpigi follows ongoing concerns about violence in the region, and investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the death. The incident has sparked speculation about the Sergeant Robert death and its implications for local security.
Uganda Police confirmed the murder. Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said officers recovered the body, and they found the head later. Relatives identified Kabera, about 50 years old, by a distinctive scar on the right thumb and the shoes recovered near the scene. They transferred the remains to Mulago City Mortuary for examination.
Investigators believe the killing occurred on the night of October 16 or early on October 17. Family members said Kabera arrived in the area from Kampala the previous evening. Police recovered a large stick suspected of being used in the attack, along with other items at the scene. They have opened an investigation. The motive remains under inquiry, and no arrests have been reported.
Kabera previously served in the Rwanda Defence Force, where he worked as a military instructor and performed as a soloist with the Army Jazz Band. He became publicly known under the stage name Sergeant Robert. He had been living in Uganda since late 2020.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as they become available.
