AU delegation expected Monday in DRC, What are the tough challenges will face?
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is still awaiting the judgment of the Constitutional Court on the various appeals relating to the contested presidential election, RFI reports
On Thursday, the African Union called for the suspension of the proclamation of the final elections results.
President Paul Kagame, the current president of the organization, will be part of the delegation of heads of state that will head to DRC on Monday to find a peaceful solution.
No confirmation of the presence of South African Cyril Ramaphosa who was hostile to any intervention before the proclamation of the final results as he will be in Davos on Tuesday, this website has learnt.
There could be also the challenge of Congolese who are against President Paul Kagame of Rwanda taking into consideration wars that engaged two countries in past years.
However, a regional political analyst who spoke to TOPAFRICANEWS.COM highlighted “President Kagame as someone who is aware of the political and security situation in the Great Lakes Region is the good choice on behalf of the African Union and the sub-region to help find the peaceful solution to the disputed election results”
On the other hand, mention is made of the names of Congolese Denis Sassou-Nguesso, Namibian Hage Geingob and Zambian Edgar Lungu.
“The Congolese have already rejected the idea of facilitation,” laments one of the entourage of one of the heads of state present in Addis Ababa.
“However, adds this source, there is for all neighboring countries a security imperative, this is what convinced the other heads of state, Joseph Kabila plays a dangerous game.”
Kinshasa scandalized
Kinshasa is questioning the legality of the AU declaration and even the summit
from which it derives.
“We count the years in power by the various heads of state who “dare to lecture Joseph Kabila who accepts the victory of an opponent,” the source told RFI
But Friday no Congolese official seemed able to say whether the Constitutional
Court would rule before or after the arrival of the delegation of heads of
state.
Justice is independent, recalled the spokesman of the Congolese government.
The judges of the Constitutional Court have until Monday midnight to give their judgment.
Saying he was “very happy” with the AU’s statement that “he has
taken the measure of the seriousness of the situation,” Bishop Fridolin
Ambongo, the Archbishop of Kinshasa, says that the Cenco is “ready to
welcome the delegation of Heads of State “to explain to them the method
used for the observation which calls into question the provisional results of
the CENI concerning the presidential election.
“It is with great serenity,” he adds, “that we are waiting for them and also with hope for our people.”
Pending the arrival of the AU delegation, Martin Fayulu, the presidential candidate who claims victory has called on Friday his supporters calm and not give in to provocation.
“Lamuka and I assure you that we are very open and willing to actively contribute to the search for the truth of the solutions to this useless crisis. That is why I ask you not to give in to provocation, to avoid everything that can divide us or break the national cohesion …” He said
