Muhanga: DUTERIMBERE ONG works to empower women towards eradication of poverty
DUTERIMBERE ONG, a national Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is helping Women’s Cooperative in Muhanga District of the Southern Province towards eradication of poverty, TOPAFRICANEWS reports.
The organization which was founded in 1987 with 29 women who wanted to add value to women activities by demonstrating their roles and capabilities in development is now empowering women grouped in various cooperatives which ICYEREKEZO Cooperative of Nyamabuye, KOAZIMU of Mushishiro and KTB of Nyarusange.
The Cooperatives mentioned above focus on horticulture, off-farm activities which enable them to improve living conditions among their families.
However, DUTERIMBERE ONG is currently owned by 880 members drawn across 5 provinces from 11 former districts before decentralization.
These districts are Huye, Karongi, Kigali, Gicumbi, Muhanga, Musanze, Nyagatare, Nyamagabe, Rubavu, Rusizi and Rwamagana.
The Organization’s governance structure has a general assembly of 880 members top on leadership hierarchy.
Throughout their programs, Duterimbere uses different approaches sustain beneficiary’s development.

DUTERIMBERE uses various approach to serve beneficiaries among them there is an approach called Gender Action Learning System where beneficiaries are trained on conflicts resolution in order to avoid disputes that can hinder the development in their respective families
Through the Gender Action Leaning System (GALS) methodology, Duterimbere has worked to see a country where women and men enjoy equal rights and benefits as part of an inclusive development process of their households and the nation.
Duteimbere ONG enables beneficiaries to have access to loans as well as training them on various programs which include trainings on Entrepreneurship, behavior before and after getting credits, values technics for horticulture seedling preparation, financial literacy, Gender programs among other intervention.
Speaking at the opening of Public Exhibition which took place in Muhanga District from 28th May to 31 May 2019, on behalf of DUTERIMBERE NGO, Chantal Mukamutana told officials that “DUTERIMBERE ONG works with Oxfam and other partners to empower women in various domains which include agriculture, entrepreneurship, programs related to financial literacy among other interventions.”
Mukamutana added “In order to sustain their achievement we use Gender Action Learning System approach where beneficiaries are trained on conflicts resolution in order to avoid disputes that can hinder the development in their respective families.”
She added that DUTERIMBERE NGO links beneficiaries to DUTERIMBERE IMF so they can get loans to advance their development projects.
These women exhibited their achievements made with the support of DUTERIMBERE ONG.
They come from Muhanga District some from Cyeza sector, Shyogwe, Nyarusange and Mushishiro sector.
