Rwanda-COVID 19: Six Universities allowed to fully reopen

 

The Ministry of Education announces that six universities will be allowed to resume teaching activities using both technology and physical presence in all levels while four others, including the University of Rwanda, will reopen only for those in final years, TOP AFRICA NEWS reports.

The Minister of Education, Dr Uwamariya Valentine announced the development during a press conference that brought together officials from various Ministries including the Minister of Health, Dr Daniel Ngamije, the Minister of Local Government, Prof Shyaka Anastase, the spokesperson of the Rwanda National Police, CP John Bosco Kabera and Minister of Trade and Industry, Soraya Hakuziyaremye.

Dr Uwamariya Valentine outlined how the schools will reopen after it was approved by a recent Cabinet meeting.

Dr Uwamariya Valentine says the reopening of schools will begin this October, starting with colleges and universities.

She said that in an audit conducted by the education authorities, they found that some universities should be allowed to open but some also operate in an unusual way.

There are six universities that are allowed to open as usual with use of technology or by physical class attendance.

The six universities are the University of Global Health Equity in Butaro Sector, Burera District, Africa Leadership University (ALU) in Kigali, AIMS, the University of Carnegie Melon, OKLAHOMA University and RICA.

There are also four universities that are allowed to open but for students in final years. These are the University of Rwanda, Mount Kenya University and IPRC.

University of Rwanda explains that All returning students of 3rd, 4th & 5th Year will be accommodated on campus hostels.

“As a principle there will be no students in ghetto residences as a strict measure to contain spread of COVID-19. That’s one of the reasons students will restart school in phases.” UR explains

More universities will reopen after based on the audit findings.

She also said that high schools will also reopen next November but this will also start with a special way as they will start with those in upper and final levels.
