USAID Recognizes World Refugee Day, Urges Support for Displaced People
In a statement released on World Refugee Day, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) acknowledged the staggering number of refugees worldwide and the devastating impact of forced displacement on individuals and communities.
Acting Spokesperson Shejal Pulivarti highlighted the various factors driving displacement, including conflict, persecution, and natural disasters. Pulivarti emphasized the dire situations faced by refugees, particularly in regions like Sudan, where conflict has led to the displacement of over 9 million people.
Despite the challenges faced by refugees, USAID remains committed to providing support through emergency food assistance, livelihood support, and resilience-building initiatives. As the largest donor of emergency food aid to refugees globally, USAID has reached tens of millions of people in 32 countries last year alone.
USAID also works closely with the U.S. Department of State to provide life-saving aid and empower displaced individuals to rebuild their lives. Pulivarti stressed the importance of treating all refugees with respect, dignity, and compassion, regardless of their background or nationality.
On World Refugee Day and every day, USAID stands in solidarity with refugees around the world and the host countries and communities that support them. The agency urges continued support for displaced people and efforts to address the root causes of forced displacement.
