Livestock farmers in Nyagatare District see significant increase in milk production
In Nyagatare District, a key area for agriculture and livestock, daily milk production is on the rise. The district has seen an increase from 75,000 liters to a potential 80,000 liters per day thanks to various initiatives aimed at promoting livestock farming.
The Nyagatare District administration has been implementing programs to enhance grass and water availability for livestock, providing training on modern livestock farming techniques, and raising awareness among livestock farmers. These efforts have proven successful, with farmers reporting significant benefits from the training they have received.
One farmer, Mirenge Desire from Karangazi Sector, shared his success story, attributing the increase in milk production to the government’s support and training. He emphasized the positive impact of learning proper livestock management practices, which have led to a substantial improvement in his livelihood.
Nyagatare District vice mayor for social affairs , Murekatete Juliet, commended the collaboration between the administration and livestock farmers, highlighting the progress made in livestock farming. She encouraged farmers to continue prioritizing programs aimed at boosting production and ensuring its sustainability for the overall economic development of the district and the country.
The surge in milk production has also benefited the Inyange Milk Powder factory in Nyagatare District, which now has the capacity to process 650,000 liters of milk powder per day. Currently, the factory receives 87,467 thousand liters of milk daily, showcasing the positive impact of increased livestock production in the region.
