Delegates from the Episcopal Conference of the Democratic Republic of Congo (CENCO) arrived in Goma for a crucial dialogue with leaders of the AFC/M23 movement, marking a renewed push for peace in the region.

The discussions, which took place in a spirit of openness, aimed to address the ongoing conflict and identify pathways to a sustainable resolution.

Monsignor Donatien Nshole, Secretary-General of CENCO, expressed his appreciation for the hospitality extended by AFC/M23 representatives, led by Corneille Naanga.

He highlighted how the meeting contributed to the Church’s understanding of its  program which seeks to foster lasting peace in the DRC and strengthen relations with neighboring countries.

“In this Jubilee year, the Church is prioritizing peace. That is why we have decided to engage in dialogue with all key stakeholders in the country,” Monsignor Nshole stated.

He underscored the Church’s belief that military solutions are ineffective in resolving the country’s deep-rooted crisis, reaffirming its commitment to nonviolent approaches.

During the meeting, representatives of AFC/M23 outlined the grievances that led them to take up arms, including claims of political and ethnic marginalization. They also addressed allegations made against the movement, particularly those accusing them of seeking to establish an independent state and engaging in illegal mining of  minerals.

The Catholic Church in the DRC has been actively working with other Christian denominations to encourage dialogue among different factions in the country.

By engaging with groups like AFC/M23, the Church hopes to pave the way for broader negotiations and a lasting resolution to the insecurity that has plagued eastern Congo for decades.

This initiative comes at a critical moment, as violence and instability continue to threaten millions of civilians in the region.

Observers note that the Catholic Church’s involvement in peace efforts is a significant step, as it remains one of the most influential institutions in Congolese society, with the potential to mediate between conflicting parties.

As discussions continue, both the Church and AFC/M23 leaders have expressed their willingness to keep channels of communication open, affirming that dialogue remains the only viable path toward a peaceful and united Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a recent call, Pope Francis  voiced concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and called for an immediate end to hostilities.

Speaking during his weekly general audience at the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, the pontiff called on all parties to cease hostilities and ensure the protection of civilians in Goma and other conflict-affected areas.

Francis also expressed concern over developments in Congo’s capital Kinshasa, calling for an end to violence against people and property. He urged local authorities and the international community to make every effort for a peaceful resolution.

“As I pray for the swift restoration of peace and security, I call on local authorities and the international community to make every effort to resolve the conflict through peaceful means,” he added.
