Rwanda’s Security: A Non-Negotiable Priority in the Face of External Threats

In recent weeks, Rwanda has found itself at the center of a storm, facing threats from powerful foreign entities that aim to leverage aid and support as tools for political pressure. This situation arises amidst ongoing security challenges in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which pose a significant risk to Rwanda’s stability and safety. The Rwandan government must steadfastly reject any compromises that could jeopardize its national security or the well-being of its citizens.

In a statement addressed to the UN Security Council on DRC, the U.S Ambassador Dorothy Shea, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim told the council that “In light of Rwanda’s support for M23’s hostility against MONUSCO, we reiterate that the UN should immediately engage the Rwandan government at the highest levels to underscore the importance of peacekeeper safety and security.”

She also added that “Without a change in Rwanda’s behavior, the UN should reevaluate Rwanda’s ability to participate constructively in UN peacekeeping.”

Today, the government must remain vigilant against external pressures that seek to undermine its sovereignty and stability.

Rwanda has made remarkable strides since the dark days of the 1994, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to national development. However, when it comes to the matter of security and our lives, this progress is fragile and can easily be reversed if security is compromised.

For instance, a Rwandan taxpayer expects a secure environment—one where citizens can thrive without fear of violence or instability. To acquiesce to external threats without a sustainable solution would be a betrayal of the population’s trust and aspirations.

Moreover, foreign powers, particularly those in Europe and the United States, must adopt a nuanced understanding of Rwanda’s cautious approach to security. Rather than resorting to economic sanctions, these nations should recognize Rwanda’s pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in conflict-ridden regions.

The Rwandan military has been instrumental in peacekeeping missions globally, contributing to stability where it is deployed. This commitment not only enhances Rwanda’s international standing but also underscores the importance of security for development.
