Ghana’s Mining in Motion Summit 2025: A Step Towards Sustainable Growth

By TOP AFRICA NEWS Reporter
Accra, Ghana – The inaugural Mining in Motion Summit 2025 has been announced, themed “Sustainable Mining and Local Growth: Leveraging Resources for Global Impact.” The summit, scheduled for June 2-4, aims to promote responsible artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), drive economic growth, and catalyze international partnerships.
During an online press conference introducing the summit, Charles Kwaten Antwi, Ghana Mining Governance & Investment Expert and co-director of the Ashanti Green Initiative (AGI), shared insights into the summit’s objectives and themes. The event seeks to position Ghana as Africa’s largest gold producer, enhancing its leadership role in sustainable practices and policy reforms within the ASM sector.
Antwi expressed that the summit is more than just a gathering; it’s a “conversation about progress and possibilities.” He emphasized the importance of innovation and responsibility in transforming artisanal mining into a force for good, aiming to harness Ghana’s rich history of mining, which dates back centuries, for inclusive growth and community upliftment.

“The story of artisanal mining is deeply rooted in our culture,” Antwi reflected. “While it offers significant opportunities for income and employment, it also raises concerns about safety, environmental impact, and regulatory frameworks. We need to use this summit to explore sustainable and community-driven solutions to these challenges.”
Overview of the Ashanti Green Initiative
The Ashanti Green Initiative focuses on promoting environmental restoration and sustainable development in Ghana. The organization aims to rehabilitate degraded lands, restore water bodies, and foster responsible natural resource management. In the context of the summit, Antwi outlined how AGI’s initiatives align with global efforts to combat climate change while empowering local communities through education and capacity-building programs.
A Collaborative Approach Towards ASM
As part of the summit’s agenda, key decision-makers—including Ghana’s President John Mahama—will be present, alongside representatives from various African countries, international organizations, and mining institutions. The event will explore themes such as the role of traditional authorities in artisanal mining practices, strengthening environmental and social governance compliance, and integrating ASM into global financial supply chains.
Antwi highlighted, “Ghana is at a critical intersection of its mining journey. We must recast the narrative of gold production, not just as a raw input supplier but as a leader in responsible resource governance.”
Addressing Challenges and Opportunities
The press conference also featured a discussion on urgent issues facing the ASM sector, particularly illegal mining. Antwi acknowledged that addressing this multi-faceted challenge requires sustained efforts from all stakeholders. “Building systems that are fair, inclusive, and resilient while upholding the rule of law is vital,” he stressed.

Other pressing concerns include the need for better benefit-sharing for host communities impacted by mining operations. Antwi emphasized that community investment and strengthening alliances with local populations are essential to ensure mining efforts yield tangible benefits.
“Without a strong social alliance, all our mining efforts in these communities would be futile,” he noted, advocating for participatory engagement in community development planning.
Fostering Local Content and Fair Competition
Questions during the press conference raised sentiments around perceived preferential treatment given to international companies over local entrepreneurs. Antwi responded by asserting that a level playing field is crucial for inclusive growth. He called for transparent policy frameworks that support both foreign investment and the growth of indigenous businesses.
The Mining in Motion Summit 2025 is positioned to be a turning point for Ghana, encouraging a collaborative approach among all stakeholders to build a sustainable future for artisanal mining. By focusing on formalizing the ASM sector, fostering international partnerships, and promoting responsible mining practices, Ghana aims to harness its vast mineral resources to drive economic empowerment and responsible governance.
As the countdown to the summit continues, there is a shared optimism among stakeholders that meaningful change and collaboration will emerge, setting a new standard for the gold industry in Africa and beyond.
