Northern Province Leaders and Citizens Unite to Honor Genocide Victims in Ruhengeri

Leaders and residents of Rwanda’s Northern Province gathered in large numbers to honor victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, reaffirming a collective commitment to remembrance, dignity, and a future free from division.
The 32nd commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi was marked by a solemn evening remembrance held at the former Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri, a site deeply rooted in the painful history of the atrocities. The event brought together provincial leaders, local authorities, and citizens in a shared moment of reflection and tribute.

The commemoration began with a remembrance walk that started from the GOICO market, symbolizing a journey of memory and unity. Led by Northern Province Governor Maurice Mugabowagahunde, the procession drew hundreds of participants who walked in silence, honoring the lives lost and demonstrating solidarity with survivors.
At Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri Genocide Memorial, attendees observed a moment of silence and laid wreaths in tribute to the victims who were killed at that very site.

Messages delivered centered on hope, resilience, and responsibility and emphasized that remembering is not only a duty but also a conscious choice that every Rwandan must uphold. Through remembrance, they noted, the nation strengthens its resolve to prevent genocide from ever happening again.
Leaders also highlighted the importance of unity and collective strength, reminding citizens that Rwanda’s progress is built on the foundation of togetherness and shared values. They urged the community to remain vigilant against any form of divisionism and to continue fostering a spirit of compassion, reconciliation, and national identity.

The commemoration activities will continue on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, with further events planned to honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi particulary those who killed at Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri, communities and leaders remain committed to remembrance, unity, and ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again.
