The Northern Province joins with Ruhengeri Level Two Teaching Hospital in commemoration marking the 32nd of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, honoring victims who were hospital staff, patients, caregivers, and other Tutsi who sought care at the hospital and its affiliated health centers.

The event brought together key leaders including Governor Mugabowagahunde Maurice, Musanze District Mayor Nsengimana Claudien, Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs Kayiranga Theobald, representatives from Ibuka and AVEGA Agahozo, security organs, and the wider community.

The commemoration began with a Walk to Remember from the hospital premises to the Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri Genocide Memorial, where participants paid tribute to the victims laid to rest. The procession symbolized unity, remembrance, and resilience.

Welcoming participants, the Director General of the hospital, Dr. Philbert Muhire, expressed condolences to survivors and emphasized that Rwanda’s leadership continues to promote unity and reject divisionism, strengthening the country’s foundation for lasting peace.

Participants later laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims, reaffirming the responsibility to preserve their memory.

In his message, Governor Mugabowagahunde Maurice comforted survivors and urged the youth to take an active role during the 100 days of commemoration, including participating in Ndi Umunyarwanda and standing firm against genocide denial and distortion of history.

He further called on staff of Ruhengeri Level Two Teaching Hospital to uphold unity in their workplace, avoid any form of division, and remain committed to delivering quality health services as a way of honoring the victims and contributing to national development.

The commemoration served as a powerful reminder that remembering the past is essential in building a united, responsible, and resilient society.
