Rwanda to Host 21st Kwita Izina in 2026: A Symbol of Biodiversity and Tourism Growth

Rwanda is once again preparing to take center stage in global conservation as the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) officially announced that the 21st edition of Kwita Izina will be held on September 4, 2026, in Kinigi, within Musanze District. More than a ceremony, this event represents Rwanda’s bold leadership in conservation and sustainable tourism.
In a message shared on May 4, 2026, via its official X platform, RDB invited both Rwandans and international visitors to be part of this globally recognized celebration. Kwita Izina has evolved into a powerful symbol of unity bringing together communities, conservationists, and leaders to honor the protection of one of the world’s most endangered species.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Volcanoes National Park, the ceremony highlights the remarkable success of Rwanda’s conservation model. Through strong collaboration between government and local communities, mountain gorilla populations have been protected and nurtured, transforming the park into a world-class tourism destination.
Since its launch in 2005, Kwita Izina has steadily grown in global significance. By 2025, a total of 435 baby gorillas had been named during the 20 editions of the event each name symbolizing hope, survival, and Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to biodiversity.
This conservation success is directly fueling economic transformation. Rwanda’s tourism sector recorded a 6% increase in revenue in 2025, reaching $685 million compared to $647 million in 2024. Visitor numbers also surged by 9%, hitting approximately 1.49 million tourists, with many drawn by the unique experience of gorilla trekking.
Positioned as a premium eco-tourism offering, gorilla trekking reflects Rwanda’s high-value, low-impact strategy. Permit fees remain structured to balance conservation and accessibility: $1,500 for international tourists, $500 for foreign residents, $200 for Rwandans and East African Community citizens, and $500 for other African residents.
