Musanze Farmers Urged to Boost Potato Production as 2026B Season Targets 25 Tons per Hectare

In Musanze District, located in Rwanda’s Northern Province, farmers have been strongly encouraged to intensify their efforts in potato cultivation during the 2026B agricultural season, as the district pushes toward achieving an ambitious target of 25 tons per hectare across Food Basket Sites (FoBaSi).
During the ongoing 2026B planting season, potato farming has been expanded across 15 strategically established Food Basket Sites (FoBaSi) spread throughout different sectors of Musanze District. This initiative is part of a broader agricultural transformation strategy aimed at increasing productivity, strengthening food security, and improving household incomes among local farmers.
Authorities and agricultural experts emphasize that potatoes remain one of the most important food and cash crops in the region due to their high demand and nutritional value. As a result, farmers are being urged to apply improved farming techniques, including the use of certified seeds, proper spacing, timely weeding, and adequate use of fertilizers.

Agricultural extension officers working closely with farmers in the FoBaSi sites highlight that achieving the expected yield of 25 tons per hectare is realistic, but only if farmers maintain strict adherence to recommended agronomic practices. They also stress the importance of disease control, particularly against late blight, which has historically affected potato production in highland areas like Musanze.
Farmers themselves have expressed optimism about the season, noting that the support provided through FoBaSi programs has improved access to quality inputs and modern farming knowledge. Many believe that with continued guidance and commitment, the district can reach or even surpass the set production targets.
Local leaders in Musanze have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting farmers through regular field supervision, training sessions, and strengthening cooperative-based farming systems. They also encouraged farmers to treat agriculture as a commercial enterprise rather than subsistence farming, in order to maximize profits and sustainability.
Musanze District stands at the center of Rwanda’s efforts to boost agricultural productivity. With 15 FoBaSi sites actively supporting potato cultivation, the call for farmers to remain committed and disciplined in their farming practices is stronger than ever. Achieving the target of 25 tons per hectare is not only a goal for increased production but also a step toward transforming livelihoods and strengthening food security in the region.
