Rwandan Ambassador Dr. Diane Gashumba Strengthens African Women Diplomats’ Network in Sweden While Celebrating World Kiswahili Language Day
Sweden – July 19, 2026: Rwandan Ambassador to Sweden Dr. Diane Gashumba hosted a warm welcome reception at the Rwandan Residence in Stockholm yesterday, further solidifying ties among African women diplomats while participating in vibrant cultural celebrations that highlighted the growing influence of African voices in the Nordic region.
In her capacity as Dean of the African Ambassadors to Sweden, Dr. Gashumba welcomed the newest members of the Women African Ambassadors’ network — the Ambassadors of Namibia, Egypt, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The gathering focused on strengthening cooperation, friendship, and mutual support among the group.
“I had the delight of welcoming the newest members of the Women African Ambassadors’ family,” Ambassador Gashumba said.
“We were pleased to welcome the Ambassadors of Namibia, Egypt, and the United Republic of Tanzania, and to brief them on our ongoing activities as we continue to strengthen cooperation and friendship among African women ambassadors in Sweden.”
Tanzania’s Ambassador to Sweden, Swahiba Habib Mndeme, expressed gratitude for the hospitality, stating it was a pleasure to join such an inspiring group of colleagues.
Later in the day, Dr. Gashumba joined celebrations for World Kiswahili Language Day in Stockholm, praising the vibrant event organized by the Tanzanian Embassy.
The gathering brought together Kiswahili speakers, diplomats, and friends from various cultures for music, traditional performances, and Tanzanian cuisine.
“Congratulations, Your Excellency and my dear sister, Swahiba Habib Mndeme, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Sweden, on a truly beautiful World Kiswahili Language Day celebration!” Dr. Gashumba said.
She highlighted Ambassador Mndeme’s remarks: “Kiswahili is no longer simply a language of communication; it’s a bridge that connects people across nations and cultures.”
The Rwandan diplomat noted how the event transformed parts of Stockholm into a hub for African culture.
“Last evening, Stockholm became a vibrant home for Kiswahili speakers & lovers, and friends from many cultures, united through language, music, culture, and delicious Tanzanian cuisine.”
These activities underscore Dr. Gashumba’s dual role as a seasoned diplomat and champion of African solidarity.
A pediatrician by training and former Rwandan Minister of Health and Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, she has brought her experience in leadership and international collaboration to her current posting, which covers Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.
Observers say such initiatives by African women ambassadors are helping amplify African priorities — from cultural preservation to health and development cooperation — within Nordic diplomatic circles.The events come just weeks after Rwanda’s 32nd Liberation Day commemorations in Sweden, where Dr. Gashumba also played a prominent role in honoring the country’s progress and unity.
