Beyond Limits: A New Standard for Inclusive Mountaineering in Africa

First of Two Consecutive International Teams Successfully Summits Mount Kilimanjaro, Redefining Human Potential, Inclusion, and What Is Possible

MOUNT KILIMANJARO, TANZANIA — August 3, 2026 — High on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the world’s most inspiring stories of human determination is unfolding.

This morning, Team 1 of the international #AccessibleTogether expedition successfully reached the Roof of Africa, demonstrating that accessibility, inclusion, teamwork, and perseverance can accomplish extraordinary things.

A second international team will begin its ascent later this week, continuing a mission that is transforming Africa’s highest peak into a global symbol of resilience, opportunity, and human potential.

Organized by Accessibility Accelerator, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, in partnership with Paratrek, the consecutive expeditions unite climbers of all abilities from several countries, including participants with disabilities, students, educators, physicians, first responders, military veterans, families, and community leaders. Team 1’s summit included three participants using specialized adaptive trekking equipment, alongside teammates representing a wide range of abilities and life experiences.
“Every climber has earned the right to celebrate their own achievement,” said Jamie Lassner, Executive Director of Accessibility Accelerator. “Some participants may leave this mountain with a record. Every participant will leave knowing they accomplished something extraordinary. What makes this expedition truly remarkable is that personal success is never separate from the success of the team. Every individual achievement strengthens everyone around them and inspires others to believe that more is possible. That is the spirit of #AccessibleTogether.”

Several participants are expected to achieve historic individual milestones, while the expedition itself is anticipated to establish significant team accomplishments. Yet its greatest achievement extends beyond records. Every climber is encouraged to pursue their personal best while helping others achieve theirs, demonstrating that inclusion does not diminish excellence—it elevates it.
Throughout the expedition, teammates encourage one another, overcome challenges together, share responsibilities, and celebrate every milestone. Success is measured not by who reaches the summit first, but by how each person contributes to the success of the entire team.

Guided by Paratrek’s experienced mountain professionals, the expeditions embody a simple principle:
Accessible Together. Extraordinary Together.

“No one climbs Kilimanjaro alone,” said Omer Zur, Founder of Paratrek. “Every guide, porter, and climber becomes part of one team. Every person helps someone else move forward. That spirit transforms this expedition into something far greater than reaching a summit.”

Beyond the mountain, the #AccessibleTogether expeditions challenge long-held assumptions about disability and inclusion. They demonstrate that when barriers are replaced with opportunity, and every individual is empowered to contribute, the impact extends far beyond the summit.

Whether history ultimately remembers these expeditions for their records or not, their greatest legacy will be measured in lives inspired, perceptions transformed, and the enduring reminder that humanity achieves its greatest accomplishments when everyone has the opportunity to climb together.
