Political Tensions Rise as Nigeria Prepares for 2027 Elections

ABUJA — Nigeria’s political landscape is heating up ahead of the 2027 general elections, with legal challenges, opposition realignments, and sharp exchanges among leading figures dominating the national conversation.

Former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar, now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has filed a lawsuit seeking to bar President Bola Tinubu from contesting the next presidential poll. The suit centres on a disputed National Youth Service Corps certificate. A Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned the matter until September 28 after complications arose with serving court documents on the president’s legal team.

Atiku has also criticised the current cost of living and pledged to review the Nigerian Education Loan Fund policy if elected, framing it as part of a broader effort to ease pressure on students and families.

Nigeria Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has remained a prominent voice in the unfolding debates. He has publicly criticised opposition figures, including Rotimi Amaechi, while defending President Tinubu’s right to campaign even amid ongoing investigations. Wike has also accused the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association of engaging in politics rather than focusing on issues affecting the legal profession and questioned the stance of some Nigerians living in the United Kingdom who support the ruling party.

In the South-East, the Indigenous People of Biafra issued a 14-day ultimatum to the federal government, demanding that the appeal of its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, against his conviction and life sentence be listed and heard. The group warned that failure to meet the deadline could lead to a boycott of the 2027 elections across the region.

The political class also paused to mourn the death of Peoples Democratic Party chieftain Dan Orbih, the former National Vice Chairman for the South-South. Tributes have poured in from across party lines.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress after earlier involvement with the African Democratic Congress, continues to feature in discussions about possible opposition coalitions and strategies for the coming election cycle.

Renewed attention has also turned to decades-old records indicating that President Tinubu was the subject of a United States investigation into drug-related matters in the 1990s. The government has dismissed the revival of these records as a politically motivated attempt to influence the 2027 contest.

As the election calendar draws closer, these legal battles, public criticisms, and strategic moves are setting the tone for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
