Two Rwandan educators have been selected to speak at the World Literacy Summit at Oxford University in March 2027.

Dr Theodore Habimana from INES Ruhengeri in Musanze and Emmanuel Bizimana from Maranyundo Girls’ School in Nyamata have been chosen to speak at the World Literacy Summit. They are among 450 speakers selected from over 85 countries, and the only two based in Rwanda.

Their talks:

Theodore Habimana: “From Emergency Innovation to Systemic Change: Technology, Teacher Agency, and the Humanitarian-Development Nexus in Refugee Education in Rwanda”

Emmanuel Bizimana: “Promoting Digital Reading Literacy in Areas Where Traditional Reading Is Poorly Practiced: Gauging Where Rwandan Secondary Schools Are At”

Habimana is affiliated with INES Ruhengeri, a private research university located in Musanze, Northern Province. His presentation focuses on the education of refugee children in Rwanda, specifically examining the implications of transitioning emergency measures into sustainable solutions.

Bizimana teaches in the language department at Maranyundo Girls’ School, a boarding school in Bugesera, which is the poorest district in Rwanda. The school opened in 2008 with an initial enrollment of just sixty girls and has since expanded to more than four hundred students, with half of them receiving full scholarships. It has consistently been recognized as the leading girls’ school in the country for several years.

“Literacy initiatives are carried out in a variety of local settings, such as classrooms, libraries, and community halls,” stated Andrew Kay, CEO and Founder of the World Literacy Foundation. “The purpose of the Summit is to promote learning and encourage collaboration among all individuals involved in this vital work, transcending national boundaries.”

The World Literacy Summit unites educators, researchers, publishers, and policymakers and is expected to attract 1,600 delegates, alongside ten networking events. It has been hosted at Oxford University since 2012, and the 2027 summit runs from 31 March to 3 April.

Registration is now open at worldliteracysummit.org.
