Rwanda’s Unity and reconciliation prevail as country marks Historical “October 1, 1990”

Rwanda’s National Commission for Unity and Reconciliation affirms that the level of unity and reconciliation in Rwanda can be seen in the daily lives of Rwandans as they are overwhelmed with the joy of living in harmony with each other, TOPAFRICANEWS reports.

This was confirmed by Fidele Ndayisaba, Executive Secretary of the Commission on Thursday, October 1, 2020 during an interview with Rwanda Broadcasting Agency.

The remarks are made on the day when Rwandans are commemorating unity and reconciliation since the same date in 1990, when country’s heroes march to break the long-standing divisions that had bound Rwandans for decades.

October 1, 1990 marks the beginning of the liberation struggle led by the RPA forces.

Ndayisaba said that given the way Rwandans live together, how hard they work and the willingness to work and help each other, it is becoming more and more apparent that unity and reconciliation have reached another level.

Citing the current situation in Rwanda and the rest of the world under threat from Covid-19, he said: “As in these days of Covid-19, Rwandans have risen to break the same rope, get to help their neighbors, help them where possible and help them when they need help…”.

He added: “What you hear from people, where you find that they express their love for their country, they think about the great deeds that are important to the region in which they live, and you also see that now that Rwandans share a life and work together, they are united in many activities…”

Every month of October, Rwandans celebrates unity and reconciliation, but because of Covid-19, many people will not be able to meet, this month will be celebrated through the media, social media and in villages but with limited number of people to avoid possible contamination of COVID -19.

This year’s theme is: “Together, we build a Rwanda free from divisions and discrimination.”

The month will focus on the community, which is considered to be the center of unity and reconciliation, the role of youth in unity and reconciliation, and for each district to have the opportunity to express their views on what they enjoy as well as what they see as a barrier to action.

However, Ndayisaba says there are still obstacles to unity and reconciliation, as some are still manifesting the Genocide ideology among other division activities, which have been observed in 26th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

“The perpetrators should be prosecuted, because divisions are the root cause of all the dangers that Rwandans have faced leading to the genocide against Tutsi, that time, there were long-standing discrimination and divisiveness among Rwandans,” he said.

Ndayisaba says that while Rwandans are celebrating National Day and the start of the month of unity and reconciliation, they should take part in activities and talks that teach unity and reconciliation, but it is a time to examine themselves and see where they live and what would be detrimental to unity and reconciliation, and resolve to overcome them and continue to rebuild the country.
