Commander of U.S. Africa Command, U.S. Army General Stephen Townsend urged African Military forces to “stay out of politics”

U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa command travelled to West Africa Nov. 15-19 to discuss security issues across the region.

On Thursday 3rd February, 2022, the Commander of U.S Africa Command, U.S. Army General Stephen Townsend had an interactive session with journalists from across Africa to discuss the 2022 African Chiefs of Defense Conference and the United States’ and Africa’s shared commitment to security on the continent.

Gen. Stephen took on the current situation where Military forces are seizing power from Civilian Government.

Gen. Stephen said “Recently, the world has seen an emerging trend of unconstitutional military-led changes of government.”

He added that overthrowing elected leaders can undo decades’ worth of progress on democracy.  

“These military seizures of power are inconsistent with U.S. democratic values and our professional military ethos.  So it’s important, we believe, that our military partners stay out of politics.” Gen. Stephen emphasized.
