Soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo Seek Refuge in Rwanda After Defeat by M23 Movement

In a dramatic turn of events, soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who were defeated by the M23 movement have crossed the border and sought refuge in Rwanda. This comes after M23 fighters took control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province in the DRC.
The defeated soldiers, some of whom surrendered to M23 and others who fled to Rwanda, arrived at the border and were welcomed in Rubavu District. They were checked by Rwandan security forces to ensure they have no weapons remaining in their possession. More than 20 people entered the border carrying guns and ammunition, which they handed over to the Rwandan Armed Forces.
One of the soldiers who surrendered to the Rwandan Army cited the reason for defection as the DRC Army being defeated by M23. United Nations peacekeepers working in Goma, including those from the peacekeeping mission in the DRC, requested Rwanda for access to the border so they could leave the city controlled by M23 and head towards Kinshasa.
The conflict in the East of the DRC has been ongoing for years, but recent events have escalated tensions. M23 captured several towns, including Goma, prompting international organizations to evacuate non-essential workers from the area.
The political spokesman of the M23 movement, Lawrence Kanyuka, confirmed the capture of Goma and called on residents to remain calm. DRC soldiers were urged to lay down their weapons and hand them over to UN troops.
Rwandan Deputy Spokesperson Alain Mukuralinda reassured the public that despite ongoing fighting between M23 and DRC forces near the border, Rwanda’s security remains intact.
As the situation continues to unfold, refugees from the DRC find temporary shelter in Rwanda while tensions remain high in the region. The international community closely monitors developments as efforts are made to restore peace and stability in the conflict-affected areas.
