Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) â February3,2025: The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa has announced a significant reduction in its diplomatic staff and issued an urgent advisory for all U.S. citizens in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to leave the country immediately, citing deteriorating security conditions in the capital and the broader region
This development comes in the wake of reports that M23 rebel fighters have advanced and taken control of Goma, a key city in eastern DRC. The escalating conflict has raised concerns of wider instability, prompting the Embassy to scale back operations and suspend non-emergency services, including visa interviews and routine support for U.S. citizens
In a statement, the Embassy underscored the urgency of the situation: âThe Embassy advises U.S. citizens in the DRC to depart immediately via commercial means. Due to the security situation in Kinshasa, the U.S. Embassy will not be conducting any visa interviews and will not be able to offer routine services for U.S. citizens.â
U.S. citizens in Kinshasa and other parts of the country are being urged to secure their travel documents, pack essential items in easily portable bags, and make immediate arrangements to leave the DRC while commercial transportation remains available.
According to the Embassy, border crossings are still operational, and many international flights are departing from NâDjili Airport in the capital

The alert also advises American citizens to prepare for potential disruptions by ensuring they have adequate supplies of food, water, medications, and other essentials, as well as a personal emergency plan that does not rely on U.S. government assistance. The security advisory warns against gatherings, demonstrations, and unnecessary movement, emphasizing the need to maintain a low profile and remain vigilant
