Rwanda Reaches Major Livestock Milestone with Arrival of Elite German Bulls

HUYE, RWANDA – In a move that signals the dawn of a new era for Rwanda’s livestock sector, the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) officially received the first batch of 10 high-genetic-merit Holstein-Friesian bulls on January 21, 2026.
This delivery is a key fulfillment of the ambitious breeding goals announced just last year, aiming to transform the nation’s cattle productivity through advanced reproductive technologies.
Sourced from premier breeders in Germany, these bulls are not ordinary livestock. They possess the genetic potential to sire cows capable of producing over 10,000 liters of milk per lactation—a figure that dwarfs current national averages and is expected to significantly boost farmer incomes.
The shipment marks the first phase of a larger expansion plan. By April 2026, an additional 20 high-genetic-merit bulls are scheduled to arrive, including:
The new arrivals will be housed at the Songa Station in Huye District, which has been revitalized as the Centre of Excellence in Bovine Genetic Improvement. Funded through the Rwanda Dairy Development Project-Phase 2 (RDDP 2), the center is transitioning into a national hub for:
- Mass Production: Scaling up to produce over 900,000 semen doses annually.
- Advanced Biotech: Implementing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer to rapidly multiply superior genetics.
- Professional Training: Serving as a research and innovation site for farmers and livestock technicians.
This initiative is a cornerstone of Rwanda’s PSTA 5 and NST2 frameworks, which target a national milk production of over 1.32 million metric tonnes per year by 2028/2029.
By domesticating the production of high-quality semen and embryos, Rwanda is moving toward self-reliance in the livestock sector, reducing the need for expensive animal imports and ensuring long-term resilience for smallholder farmers.
