Musanze Youth Honor Victims and Pledge Unity Ahead of Kwibuka 32

In preparation for the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (Kwibuka 32), the youth of Musanze district spearheaded a special community work initiative, known as Umuganda, dedicated to cleaning and preserving genocide memorial sites. This activity served as both a practical commitment to upholding the dignity of the memorials and a profound moment of reflection on Rwanda’s journey of healing and unity.

The Umuganda successfully convened a wide array of participants, including district leaders, security personnel, and youth representatives. The event was led by Kayiranga Theobald, the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, and saw the attendance of key stakeholders such as Twizere Rusisiro Festus, President of Ibuka in Musanze District, SSP James Bagabo, the District Police Commander, and representatives from the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) and the National Youth Council.
For the young attendees, the Umuganda transcended routine community service; it was a meaningful act of honoring the victims and embracing their responsibility as guardians of Rwanda’s future.

During the gathering, leaders delivered powerful messages, underscoring the vital role the youth play in safeguarding national unity and actively preventing the re-emergence of divisive ideologies. Participants were strongly encouraged to remain vigilant against genocide ideology in all its forms and to proactively champion the values of unity, resilience, and shared identity among all Rwandans.
Specifically, the youth were called upon to deepen their commitment to national unity, reject any narratives that promote division, and engage in constructive dialogue. They were encouraged to educate their peers and serve as ambassadors of peace within their respective communities.

Furthermore, young people were advised to take ownership of the history of the Genocide against the Tutsi: learning its truth, preserving its memory, and ensuring its lessons are never forgotten. This includes a firm resolve to stand against denial and revisionism, while offering meaningful and compassionate support to survivors.
Through their actions and unwavering commitment to upholding the truth and fighting genocide ideology, the youth of Musanze are playing an essential part in ensuring that Rwanda’s difficult past becomes a solid foundation for a stronger, more united future.
