HOUSTON, TEXAS – The Rwandan basketball community is in mourning following the tragic news that Kenrik Kabano, a standout prospect for the youth national team, and his mother, Rosine Kabano, were killed in a car accident on Monday evening, April 20, 2026.

The 18-year-old shooting guard, a senior at Klein Oak High School in Spring, Texas, was widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Rwandan basketball. The Rwanda Basketball Federation (FERWABA) confirmed the devastating loss early Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the sports world both in Rwanda and the United States.

A Star on the Rise

Kabano first gained international attention during the 2023 FIBA U16 African Championship. Representing Rwanda, he proved to be a lethal offensive threat, famously dropping 21 points in a quarterfinal clash against powerhouse Egypt. Known for his “shooting instinct” and high basketball IQ, he was a key figure in Rwanda’s strategy for the upcoming FIBA U18 Afrobasket qualifiers.

At Klein Oak High School, Kabano was not just an athlete but a leader, nearing his graduation with aspirations that extended far beyond the court.

Beyond his prowess with a basketball, Kenrik was known for his academic dedication and humanitarian heart. He often spoke of his desire to become an orthopedic surgeon, hoping to one day open free healthcare clinics across Africa to support underprivileged athletes.

His mother, Rosine, was a constant pillar of support for his dreams, often seen cheering him on from the sidelines. The Kabano family has deep athletic roots; Rosine was a former basketball player herself, while Kenrik’s father, Mike, was a competitive tennis player.

As news of the accident spread, tributes began to flood social media from teammates, coaches, and fans.

“Kenrik was more than just a talented player; he was a young man with a vision and a kind soul,” a spokesperson for FERWABA stated. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike Kabano and the entire family during this unimaginable time.”

Local authorities in Texas are still investigating the circumstances of the crash. Meanwhile, the Rwandan basketball community is expected to hold a memorial service to honor the young star who many hoped would one day lead the senior national team, the “Silverbacks.”

Kenrik Kabano’s journey was one of immense promise, cut short just as he was preparing to transition into the next chapter of his life. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence, both as a sportsman and a scholar.
