The Ministry of Local Government has commended the transformative role of cooperatives in accelerating socio-economic development, following an extensive visit to key development projects in Gakenke District.

The visit highlighted how collective initiatives are reshaping communities, creating jobs, and strengthening Rwanda’s local economy.

Accompanied by the Mayor of Gakenke District, Vestine Mukandayisenga, the Governor of the Northern Province, Maurice Mugabowagahunde, alongside district officials and security representatives, the Minister of Local Government, Dominique Habinana, toured several impactful projects. Among them were the ongoing rehabilitation works at Muhondo Health Center, the renowned Dukunde Kawa cooperative, and COMIKAGI, a mining cooperative engaged in mineral extraction and processing.

At Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, the delegation witnessed firsthand how organized farmers are benefiting from value addition in coffee production. The cooperative has positioned itself as a key contributor to Rwanda’s export economy by producing high-quality coffee for international markets. Beyond exports, Dukunde Kawa has created employment opportunities for local residents and supported community development initiatives, significantly improving livelihoods.

Minister Habinana praised the cooperative model as a powerful engine for inclusive growth. He emphasized that such initiatives not only enhance productivity but also empower citizens to actively participate in the country’s economic transformation. He noted that cooperatives demonstrate how unity and collaboration can uplift communities and build a resilient economy.

The delegation also visited COMIKAGI Cooperative, where members are engaged in mining and processing minerals. The cooperative contributes to job creation and income generation, particularly for youth and surrounding communities, showcasing how organized labor can turn natural resources into sustainable economic gains.

MINALOC further encouraged all cooperatives to scale up their production both in quality and quantity to remain competitive on international markets. Emphasis was placed on innovation, adherence to standards, and continuous capacity building as key drivers of long-term success.

The visit to Muhondo Health Center underscored the government’s commitment to improving social services alongside economic development. The rehabilitation project is expected to enhance access to quality healthcare for residents, complementing the economic gains driven by cooperatives.

The visit reaffirmed the Government of Rwanda’s recognition of cooperatives as vital pillars of national development. By fostering collaboration, creating employment, and boosting exports, these cooperatives continue to play a central role in transforming lives and advancing the country’s vision for sustainable and inclusive growth.
