Hichilema Takes Early Lead in Tense Zambia Election as Vote Counting Resumes

Incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema has taken an early lead in Zambia’s presidential election following partial official results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Voting concluded last Thursday, but tallying was temporarily suspended on Friday due to isolated violence and the theft of ballot papers in certain districts. Security has since been heavily reinforced around the main counting centers in Lusaka to prevent further disruptions.

As of the latest official updates, Hichilema leads with 54.82% of the declared vote against main opposition challenger Brian Mundubile, who currently holds 43%.

If Hichilema maintains a majority above 50%, he will avoid a mandatory second-round runoff vote. The election is widely viewed as a critical referendum on the administration’s economic reforms, though international observers have noted that the campaign period was marred by allegations of political intimidation and an uneven playing field.

The opposition continues to voice concerns over potential rigging linked to the counting delays, while election officials urge calm as the final constituencies are tabulated.
