Chairperson of the African Union Commission Issues Statement on the Grave Situation in Eastern DRC

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on January 25, 2025, has expressed profound concern over the escalating security and humanitarian crisis in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In his statement, Chairperson Mahamat emphasized the alarming threats posed by the deteriorating situation to the ongoing peace-building initiatives in the region. He specifically highlighted the critical work being carried out through two African mechanisms, particularly the Luanda process, led by President João Manuel Lourenço of Angola.
The Chairperson reiterated his unwavering support for these diplomatic efforts, which remain crucial in resolving the persistent tensions between the DRC and the Republic of Rwanda, as well as addressing the internal conflict between the DRC government and its political-military opposition.
Chairperson Mahamat called for the strict adherence to the ceasefire agreements between the parties and demanded the immediate cessation of all hostilities. He further underscored the importance of prioritizing the protection of civilians and preserving human lives amid the conflict.
In light of the dire circumstances, the Chairperson issued an urgent appeal to the international community to mobilize comprehensive support for the affected populations, who continue to endure severe hardships as a result of the ongoing violence.
The African Union reaffirms its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region and stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure a lasting resolution to the crisis.
