Rwandan high commissioner demands explanation for MTN Uganda executive’s deportation

The decision to deport Rwandan national Annie Bilenge Tabura, MTN Uganda’s head of sales and distribution, has triggered a protest, reports the Daily Monitor. Rwanda’s Kampala mission has accused Uganda of deporting several of its nationals under dubious circumstances.
Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Frank Mugambage, said he had written to the Uganda government and asked why they are deporting Rwandans, but had not received any. He said Bilenge is not the first Rwandan to be deported by the Ugandan government, but rather, several Rwandans have suffered the same fate under unclear circumstances.
Tabura and her colleague, French national Olivier Prentout, the MTN Uganda chief marketing officer, were deported by Ugandan authorities on 19 and 21 January respectively. On 22 January 2019, head of mobile financial services Elza Muzzolini, was also deported from Uganda.
Security sources have said Tabura and Prentout were deported after intelligence agencies intercepted their communication to “a dangerous foreign group and persons” deemed a threat to the country’s security. The police said the duo were in regular contact with “bad people.” The two officials were reportedly returning from an MTN Group meeting in Rwanda.
